Dr. James A. Butterworth offers the latest, most innovative treatments in breast cancer reconstruction surgery at The University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City. Dr. Butterworth is a board-certified surgeon and plastic surgeon who specializes in free flap (autologous) breast reconstruction, which uses a woman’s natural tissue to form a new breast post-mastectomy.

By adding the Resensation℠ technique to free flap breast reconstruction, Dr. Butterworth now offers breast cancer survivors the opportunity to potentially restore sensation to their chest after breast removal surgery. Dr. Butterworth earned his medical degree at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He then returned to the U.S. to complete his residency training in general surgery and plastic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Following his residencies, he learned about complex cancer reconstruction during a microvascular fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

In addition to his practice, Dr. Butterworth is an associate program director of the Plastic Surgery Integrated Residency Program at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he trains and educates residents aspiring to practice plastic surgery.

A wide range of breast reconstruction options

Dr. Butterworth’s main specialty is in microvascular breast reconstruction following mastectomies or lumpectomies for breast cancer. He also provides implant reconstruction, giving women a full range of reconstructive options. His clinical practice additionally focuses on lymphedema surgery, breast reduction, skin cancer treatment and reconstruction, and a variety of breast and abdominal aesthetic procedures.
