Board certified in general surgery and plastic surgery, Dr. Ochoa has an extensive background in academics and medical research where he learned innovative breast reconstruction techniques.

He has special expertise in free flap (autologous) breast reconstruction, which uses a woman’s own body tissue to build new breasts after a mastectomy. With microsurgery, Dr. Ochoa can take tissue from another part of the body and connect it to the chest to form new breasts. At the same time, Dr. Ochoa uses the Resensation℠ technique to reconnect the nerves in the chest and potentially restore nerve function. By offering the breakthrough surgical technique, Dr. Ochoa gives mastectomy patients the possibility of renewed sensation over time.

Dr. Ochoa earned his medical degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He completed general surgery training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. With a strong interest in research, he was granted an NIH-sponsored research fellowship to study skeletal muscle physiology, angiogenesis and immunology. He then acquired a master’s degree in clinical investigation from the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Following completion of his general surgery residency, Dr. Ochoa continued his training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at University of Texas Health Science Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. In addition to earning his board certification in plastic surgery, Dr. Ochoa has also achieved status of fellow with the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Advanced breast reconstruction options after a mastectomy

Dr. Ochoa has had several articles published in peer-reviewed journals based on his research, as well as given numerous research presentations at national and regional scientific meetings. He is an active member of several plastic surgery societies and educational committees focused on breast cancer care and advocacy. He strives to provide women with a wide range of breast reconstruction options, including advanced techniques like hidden scar surgery and Resensation.
