Dr. Suhail K. Kanchwala is a plastic surgeon at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia. An associate professor of surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital, Dr. Kanchwala specializes in breast reconstruction using advanced microsurgical and laparoscopic techniques.

Penn Medicine plastic surgeons perform approximately 700 autologous (free flap) breast reconstructions annually, the highest volume free flap reconstruction center in the United States. At Penn Medicine, Dr. Kanchwala led a team of plastic surgeons in performing the first robot-assisted bilateral DIEP flap breast reconstruction, in which tissue is taken from the abdomen to form new breasts.

Dr. Kanchwala also offers Resensation℠, a surgical technique used during free flap breast reconstruction to reconnect nerves in the newly formed breast with those in chest. Reconnecting the nerves using the Resensation method has the potential restore sensation in reconstructed breasts.

Research on breast nerve restoration has found patients can start to regain some sensation several months after neurotization, and the feelings can continue to grow up to two years later.
