Eric Lai, MD

Dr. Eric C. Lai is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Kansas City, Kansas. Specializing in breast reconstruction and breast microsurgery, Dr. Lai offers ResensationSM to women undergoing breast reconstruction using their natural tissue after mastectomy.

Resensation is a surgical technique offered by select plastic surgeons across the United States with expertise in breast reconstruction and microsurgery. Using the Resensation technique, plastic surgeons performing autologous (free flap) breast reconstruction reconnect nerves in the chest with nerves in the tissue taken from the abdomen or elsewhere on the body. With the help of a nerve allograft (donated nerve) to support nerve regrowth, Resensation provides the potential for the return of sensation to reconstructed breasts.

While breast reconstruction can restore the shape, size, symmetry and softness of breasts – known as the four “S’s” – reconstruction doesn’t typically focus on the fifth “S,” sensation.
